Staying below 300kB for a XHTML chunk is not all that is required to be readable on the Sony Reader. For relatively image-heavy ePubs, you also need to stay below a certain (to me unknown) total page size. Maybe somebody can indicate how large a page + inline images can be for successful rendering on various readers.

(I ran into this problem with this sample ePub: http://www.gutenberg.ph/previews/witte/Planten.epub)
