Cookbooks: The highest priced iPad book category

Just like the iTunes app store, the iBooks app on the iPad spotlights the Top Paid (and Top Free) books within each category. Here are some charts that compare the average price (by rank)1 across the major categories. The average price of the Top 50 titles across the major categories range from $7-$15. Cookbooks, History, Biographies are slightly higher priced, while Classics, Romance, Sci-Fi, and Children/Teens have lower average prices.

(1) Data for this post is from 4/15 through 4/20/2010. Average price is based on titles that appeared among the Top Paid apps for a given category during that period.

Do the columns signify a range of ranks?

      Hi Park,
Yes the column headers (1-10, 11-20, …, 41-50) signify ranks, within a given iBooks category.

Ben, it looks like the median prices were just selected from existing price-points (as in, they are nearly all $x.99 or $x.49).

      Hi Michael,
I checked the medians, and they look correct, at least based on how I did the groupings. Titles in each group (e.g. Classics / rank 1-10), include titles that were ranked somewhere in the given range sometime during that period.

In the future, I should do the actual rank during the span of a given time period.

      Best,
      Ben

    Hi Ben
    Thanks for the info.
However I am not sure of how to read the array.
Take for instance the first figure in the left corner.
Does it mean that “among the all paid books category, the 1 to 10 most sold ebooks cost on average 10.66 USD” ?

And in case of a free ebooks among the 50 most popular titles, does it mean that its puts 0 to calculate the average price?

    Thanks for your answer Ben.

      Bzibzou,

      1. ‘Take for instance the first figure in the left corner. Does it mean that “among the all paid books category, the 1 to 10 most sold ebooks cost on average 10.66 USD” ?’
      >> Correct: “All Paid Books” that were ranked 1-10 cost $10.66 on average

      2. ‘And in case of a free ebooks among the 50 most popular titles, does it mean that its puts 0 to calculate the average price?’
      >> Actually, by definition, the FREE books have all price equal to zero.

      Regards,
      Ben
